Sewage Treatment Plants
Special Benefits
Sewage treatment plants (STPs) play a crucial role in managing wastewater and protecting the environment and public health. Here are several benefits of sewage treatment plants:
- Pollution Reduction
- Protection of Public Health
- Environmental Protection
- Odor Control
- Aesthetic Improvement
- Compliance with Regulations
- Resource Recovery
- Conservation of Water Resources
- Long-Term Cost Savings
- Mitigation of Environmental Impact
How it Works?
Sewage treatment plants are designed to remove a wide range of impurities and contaminants from raw water sources, making it safe and suitable for various applications. Here’s a list of some of the common contaminants and impurities that sewage treatment plants typically remove:
Preliminary Treatment
Screening: The first step involves the removal of large debris and objects from the incoming sewage. Bar screens or mechanical screens are used to trap and remove items like sticks, leaves, plastics, and other large particles.
Grit Removal: After screening, the wastewater may pass through a grit chamber to settle out heavy materials like sand, gravel, and small stones. These materials are typically removed and disposed of properly.
Primary Treatment
Sedimentation: In this step, the wastewater flows into a primary settling tank (also known as a clarifier). The flow velocity is reduced, allowing solid particles (sludge) to settle at the bottom, while floating materials (scum) rise to the surface. The settled sludge is removed for further processing, while the clarified water moves on to the secondary treatment phase.
Secondary Treatment
Biological Treatment: The clarified wastewater undergoes biological treatment, where microorganisms (such as bacteria) are introduced to break down organic matter present in the water. This process can occur in aerated tanks (activated sludge process), trickling filters, or other biological reactors. The microorganisms consume organic pollutants, converting them into biomass, carbon dioxide, and water.
Aeration: In the activated sludge process, air is continuously pumped into the treatment tank to provide oxygen for the microorganisms, promoting their growth and the breakdown of organic matter.
Secondary Clarification: After biological treatment, the water is sent to another settling tank to allow the remaining suspended solids and microorganisms to settle. The clarified water, now mostly free of organic pollutants, moves on to the next step.
Tertiary Treatment
Tertiary treatment is an additional step that further polishes the treated water, making it suitable for specific uses or for discharge into sensitive environments.
Filtration: Tertiary treatment may involve the use of sand filters or other filtration systems to remove any remaining suspended particles.
Disinfection: To ensure the water is safe for public health and the environment, a disinfection step is often employed. Common disinfection methods include chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, or ozonation, which kill or inactivate remaining pathogens (bacteria, viruses).
Nutrient Removal (if necessary): In some cases, the STP may include processes to remove excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which can contribute to water pollution and eutrophication in receiving bodies of water.
